URB, a Dubai-based sustainable cities developer, is planning to create the world’s first closed loop structure around a city. The project, called ‘The Loop’, is a 93-km climate-controlled cycle highway connecting more than 3 million residents to key services and locations within minutes. The enclosed structure will use evaporative cooling to control the temperature, and generate electricity from people’s footsteps. It will feature pocket parks, sports areas, fitness stations and various social spaces, along with vertical farming and community allotments. It is in line with Dubai’s 20-minute city plan which aims to make daily needs and destinations accessible within 20 minutes by foot or bicycle by 2040. The project is still in the research and development stage, and the estimated cost is confidential at this stage.
