Cotton tote bags have been marketed as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic bags. However, the reality paints a different picture: the production of a single cotton tote bag consumes a staggering 1141 liters of water. Additionally, the production of cotton involves heavy use of pesticides, which contributes to soil degradation and the creation of marine dead zones.
Understanding the “Fiber Gap”
The constant demand for cotton coupled with a diminishing supply has led to the phenomenon known as the “fiber gap.” This results in a surge in cotton prices, causing a shift towards less sustainable fibers derived from fossil resources. Besides, the cotton industry predominantly based in Asia leads to substantial CO2 emissions due to intercontinental transportation.
The Benefits of Organic Growing Systems
While organic cotton production consumes 90% more water than our lyocell wood fiber, it does offer certain benefits. Organic farming systems enhance soil quality and resilience, reducing runoff into local rivers and increasing the soil’s capacity to absorb and retain water during droughts.

In response to the environmental challenges associated with cotton bags, we developed the TreeTote. This 100% wood fiber tote bag boasts a European production line and supply chain, ensuring minimum CO2 emissions and contributing to a socially responsible and affordable product.
Sourcing from Sustainable Wood
Our bags are made from sustainably-sourced timber, predominantly Beechwood. The wood used is either from thinning operations or damaged wood left over from other processes. Almost all wood comes from Austria and neighboring countries, effectively minimizing transport-related carbon emissions.
A Sustainable Production Process
Our production process is designed with sustainability in mind. We recover and recycle over 99% of the solvent used, and drastically reduce water consumption. Instead of using plastic accessories, we use TENCEL, making our TreeTote 100% wood fiber. We also avoid any unnecessary mechanical or chemical steps after weaving, conserving energy and water.
The Water-Saving TreeTote
We’ve managed to achieve a 90% reduction in water consumption in producing our tote bags compared to conventional cotton bags. So far, our TreeTotes have saved over 39 million liters of water that would have been used for cotton bags.
Embracing the Natural Hue
We choose not to dye our bags. Dyeing involves excessive water usage and is often followed by water-intensive washing steps. By using the fabric in its natural white colour, we minimize water usage.
Certified for Safety
Our bags have received the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, a globally recognized label for textiles tested for harmful substances. This indicates high product safety and promotes customer confidence.
Responsible Disposal
After the tote bag has served its purpose, we recommend recycling it with other textiles, the highest value disposal. Furthermore, the TreeTote is fully compostable, promoting a sustainable lifecycle from creation to disposal.
